Monday 3rd October – Bike **** Gijou to Lacaune-les-Bains via Gijounet on
the ‘Little Train Green Road’ – sunny and warm – 15.16 miles, 3 hrs
15 mins out, 26.96 max.
We slept well and although the sun didn’t really make it through the
trees to us we still did our exercises outside. After breakfast we set out
on the Voie Verte from where we are parked just outside Gijounet to
Lacaune-les-Bains. It was a really nice route even if it was a gradual
uphill push all the way there!! There were lovely views from the
embankments then cutting through deep rock and over two viaducts and two
tunnels!! We took our torch for the tunnels but we didn’t need it as it
wasn’t that long! When we got nearer to Lacaune the voie verte suddenly
disappeared and turned into a rough track for the rest of the way – again
uphill when the road seemed to be going downhill! We came down on the far
side of town and skirted round the most famous bit – leaving it until
last in the sadly lack lustre town which used to be a thriving spa town :(
We didn’t want to visit the museum of chacuterie which is just as well
because as usual it was shut! We headed for the fountain which was even
mentioned in our book on the Languadoc and is described as follows: ‘Tiny
statues of four well-endowed men on top of the Fontaine des Pisseurs in
front of the towns old open air stone wash house demonstrate the diuretic
qualities of Lacaune water’!! Well one thing was for sure the men were
absolutely miniscule and so high up it was difficult to make out what they
were at all!! There was also a drunk sitting next to it which added to the
sad atmosphere so we got the hell out of there and back to the beautiful
countryside. We returned via the road which was steeply up out of the town
but then mostly downhill all the way back to Gijounet. We decided to cross
over the river bridge and climb up into the village to eat our lunch and
this was far more our cup of tea – very beautiful old buildings, very
quiet and nobody there! Whizzed back down the hill and completed the last
bit of the circuit back to the van where we had just missed the herding of
a group of very noisy cows with cow bells on! They had just gone into the
field down the hill. We packed up and headed up into the woods above
Lacaune, following the signs for a Col hoping to find somewhere to stay the
night without having to drive too far but there wasn’t anything suitable
so we headed down to Lac de Reviege and although it took nearly a full
circuit of the lake we did find a good spot with a view across the lake :)
Had a walk along the beach and collected some apples which Mag stewed up
for our dessert:)
